iMac 24" in 2010 - what dual monitor to use?

Hello,

I have a 2009 24" iMac with 1920 x 1200 native resolution.

I am looking for a second monitor to be dedicated for browsing and possibly image and photo-editing for print purposes.

From my research it seems I want to match the 1920 x 1200 rez of my iMac and my iMac's 24" size.

Some people have suggested the old Apple 23" cinema display since I am using the 2nd monitor for photo-editing purposes and maybe using a VESA adapter with an Ergotron stand to make them match at eye and height level.

I would *like* to have my second monitor "hinged" to the left of my iMac at the exact (thereabouts) same level, about 30-45 degrees.

I thought maybe the ASUS VW246H 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor would be a good choice, but I would like experienced feedback.

My budget is $200-$400. I am not using the monitor for gaming or videos, but I am confused if DVI or VGA (?) is good enough or if I would benefit from HDMI. Thank you.

I'll tell you this -- it isn't the size of the display that matters nor the number of pixels. What is important is the number of pixels per inch. If the pixels per inch matches then as you drag a window between monitors it doesn't change size. It's the change of size that is bothersome, and it also makes mouse movement between displays awkward as the cursor will jump when you cross the border.

Unfortunately the value tends not to be reported in the specs, and it isn't a straightforward calculation unless you happen to know the display height or width rather than diagonal size, unless the displays have the same aspect ratio.

Use DVI to connect, with the DVI adapter. That keeps the connection 100% digital, which it wouldn't be with VGA. HDMI offers no benefits for computer use.
