Hello - I'm in the market for a new iMac, to replace my MBP (which I love, but never move from the desk). I could realistically live without my Mac (have a PC from work for basic at-home browsing if need be) for about a month. Anything on the horizon that would compel me to wait a month before placing the order? Based on the buyers guide, and other posts on this site...I don't really see a major change coming soon.

No. There should be no more iMac updates till next year and it will not be a case redesign since they just got one last August, just a speed bump (possibly Quad-Core as well).

thanks...

Junkie - thanks for the comments...yes, I did check the buyers guide. I mentioned that in my OP, as I know that would be the first and best place to look.
OK...no reason to wait. Pulling the trigger...feels good to be getting a new machine.

Refurbs

I've been holding out for a refurb iMac 24 3.06 but haven't seen them available yet. I'm assuming its too early in the cycle? Any insight from the experts on when they might begin to be available?

They had them available for a couple months but about a week ago they disappeared. It's possible that they don't have any left and will restock it soon.

There's an event in Paris next month that Apple will be at, whilst people only really expect iPod range and possibly MacBook/MacBook Pro updates; I'm holding off until then just incase. I'd say if it doesn't happen then, we'd be looking to at least MacWorld 2009 in January for an iMac update, latest being mid-2009, both of which would make me happy about buying one in September.

Considering the event is less than a month away, I would feel rediculous if they did go crazy and update them and I'd recieved my Mac a couple weeks before then.

It's true that people say you can wait forever, but if it's not a neccessity, I'd wait till the event is over, the difference between a 3 weeks and 4 months is compelling enough for me!

Been in the same boat as you -- and now they're back (check the refurb store as of this morning)!

Haha. Sorry guys, I snagged one last Tuesday. :D
...it had been sitting there for several weeks. Are you guys looking in the US store?

Apple is not attending the Paris expo and has not for a few years.

To add.... Apple has already announced that it wont be participating in the expo this year as well!

Er.... Am I reapeting the same thing you said above?:p

But in any case..... it is widely expected [and anticipated] that Apple will be sending out media invitations very soon!

I'm looking for a thread

somewhere that discusses the migration from G4 to Intel. I'd like to have some idea of the right way to set up the new machine, how to avoid common pitfalls, what software issues there may be...e.g. will CS2 run on the intel machine...etc.

If anyone could point me toward where I might find those things discussed here, or elsewhere, I'd be grateful.

Tks. ..Looking forward to speeding up. Just got iphone yesterday to replace lost Treo680. Seems pretty cool, am waiting to sync until all migrated.
