My guess would be you have something running through a fast ethernet (100Mbps) switch or port somewhere between your modem and iMac. What does your modem/router/switching configuration look like?

the speed is fine on my Windows laptop. It is an ASUS AX88U router. It is connected to an IP phone as well via one of the ethernet ports. I just tried resetting the router but no difference. I also just unplugged the IP phone and still no difference

Totally guessing here, but I recall that changing MTU size from default 1500 to 1453 or something can sometimes help for Apple devices. Maybe worth trying, but probably a long shot

That was for PPPoE connections if I remember correctly, should not apply for wifi

He might try booting in safe mode, or creating a new blank account

Mmh sounds like a possible incompatibility with the apple's implementation of wifi and your router then 🤔
I bought a cheap Netgear Nighthawk AX6 router. I'll set it up tomorrow and see if it was an incompatibility with my ASUS router.

Thank you so much man! I could've never imagined! It was indeed the ASUS RT-AX88U router. Seems like it doesn't play well with Apple devices because both my new iMac and iPhone 12 Pro Max had this slow connection issue. I just setup the Nighthawk AX6 router and the speed is back to normal!

Had the same issue with an ASUS router a few years ago. Switched it for a TP Link and all was OK. Running a Synology router today - the best software on the market!

You’re welcome and glad you’ve sorted it out mate! Also now I know to steer away from Asus routers
