I replaced my old dual 1.8 powermac last year for the 24" Imac 2.16 core 2 with 2 gig ram.
Now that the new Imacs are out I seem to want to upgrade. I have read all over the net that the speed bump is not all that great on the new ones. I have seen no need to upgrade since it does audio and video as I need it to.
Does anyone have any hands on advice for the new vs the old Imac? Thanks MC

new ones and older ones are not that different, i think.
7600GT may even be faster than HD 2600 Pro in terms of 3D

The new one is better than the old one in everything, except in some game where the 7600 holds up a few more fps than the new card. Tho the processor and so on is much better !

If I had the option of knowing that the new Imac had a ATI card i would of purchased the old 24" with the 7600 card in it. But i warn you this is a bias view.

1. I am a Nvidia fan
2. I am a performance junkie. (Im starting to weed my self off that.)

what made me change my mind was the fact that i could get the 20" imac to fo minor gaming in and use the rest of the money to upgrade my winblows machine with a real desktop nvidia card.

If you have the money to blow away go for the new one, the CPU and extra memory you can put in them are very nice pluses. but if you want to game on you mac then keep the old 24"

I think your current 24" isn´t ready to be replaced. It is a really good machine actually, and the new iMac 24" won´t give you that much performance jump.

I've got the 2.16GHz 24" with 2Gb RAM. I don't feel like selling it to get the new one would be worth the cost to change, I'll probably wait for a few more revisions and hope that a Quad Core version with matte screen option is out in a year or so.

....But I will get the new keyboard, looks great :)

I disagree. The new glossy screen does not trump the old matte screen by any means. Not because its glossy, as I kind of like that, but in that the colors look washed out at certain angles of viewing. That really sucks.

The processor jump from 2.33 to 2.4 is marginal at best. If you want to pay the extra bucks for the 2.8 Extreme, then you 'might' see a difference in certain apps, but don't count on it being this revolutionary change in speed at your desktop. When we get to the quad core state of things, then give me a call!

The 2600 video card is equal to or less in performance than the 7600GT from last year in most applications. In the apps where it might excel, its very marginal. Nothing you'd see in 'real life' differentiation. Bad choice from Apple to keep up with future software releases and maintain a nice resale value.

Really, the only thing that does stand out is the RAM bump from 3GB in the old to 4GB in the new. But even that won't stand out unless you have some really intensive multitasking going on. That really doesn't apply to most that would buy the iMac, so its a mute point really.

Oh, and the new keyboard. I WILL buy one of those if only to get the two additional 2.0 USB ports so I can free a couple up.

I'll be waiting until the next revision. Hopefully the new iPod will have more upgrades than the new iMac. Otherwise, Apple is in for some choppy waters ahead as the competition is getting fierce in the digital music department.

I have the "old" white 24" model running at 2,33Ghz, with 3GB RAM and 500GB HD. I have to say that the new 2.8Ghz model tempted me to buy it. I like the new design, the improved speed and the 4GB of RAM. I decided no to buy it because of the not so marginal differences between the two models. The glossy screen sure troubled me but at the end I don't think it would stop me from buying it. I just thought that I can't be buying every new revision that comes on the market! I am not rich like Steve Jobs, I have to work hard to earn my money and upgrading all the time doesn't help!!! I have done it for a year but now I think I will pass. I will settle with my iMac and my Macbook. It's more than enough for my needs.
Next year I will definitely think of upgrading when a new model comes offering Blue Ray, Quad Core, 4GB RAM standard and a Matte Display!!!

The keyboard, well I already have it! It works like a charm!

2.16 gz to 2.4 == much better? I can't understand why macpeople seem to upgrade so often. Wait until a quad 4GHz is out or something =P

Do macs really need 4GB ram? Everyone and their dogs seems to upgrade. Thought DDR2 memory is very cheap now anyway due to Vistas slow sales.

I'd wait a bit before upgrading it.

Think of it this way, if you update now, you'll end up with a slower machine than if you'd bought in a year or so, and...

Your current iMac serves you fine, so there really is absolutely no need to replace it. The speed difference will be noticeable, but not supermassive. Wait a bit, your current iMac has a lot of life in it yet...
