Do you have a yellow tint on you iMac 24"?

Since a many iMac 24" owners has trouble with a yellow/magenta tint on their displays, even after several replacements, I really want to get an idea of how common this problem is. I for one really don't want to get replacement after replacement only to find out that there are no screens without this problem.

So I'm asking every iMac 24" owner on here to test their displays and report if they have the issue.

Close or minimize all your windows. Right-click on your desktop and choose "Change desktop background" from the menu. Then go to "Solid colors" and choose one of the gray colors, either one should work but I think the darker ones makes it more visible.

Check if you can see a yellow/brown tint towards the middle of the screen, and then a magenta tint towards the left part of the screen.
It should look something like in the image below.

I can't see any yellow in ur pic :S, Am i blind?
 
Recommendations

- Add one poll entry for folks who can't see yellow on your screen, add another for folks who don't care or expect a consumer-level desktop computer to have the brightness and color uniformity of a studio display
- Send Adobe a check for CS3
 
Had the identical issue on two different machines, saw the same issue on the store display model...the second one has now gone back while I reconsider my options.

I ran into it while trying to edit photos (didn't go looking for it, it presented itself as an issue during practical use), and then found and read all the threads about it. From the sounds of it, it's clearly a problem across the board for new 24" iMacs, so I'm not going to bother with a third.

It may not bother many people (not everyone is as picky, or would even care/notice depending on use), but for anyone who needs or wants an accurate and evenly lit screen, it's a showstopper.

Probably going to be a MBP/ACD for me now, so good for Apple - they'll get more of my hard-earned money now :cool:

It's not important how many there is that doesn't care about it, I'm sure there's plenty. It's important to know how widespread the issue is, because a lot of people use iMacs in their profession and they have come to expect a certain quality from Apple products over the years.
So you mean that since you are only paying $1799-2299 for a machine you should expect gray colors to look brown or yellow?

I'm not sure what you are trying to imply by "Send Adobe a check for CS3"?
 
Raineydays, I've posted several times on my problems with the white 24" iMac display. All three units (refurbished) that I've tried have had unacceptable displays. I've given up on the 24" display. Now to be fair, few users have the expectations that I have for a display. Possibly if I did not have a 20" LCD G4 iMac with a perfect display, I, too, would find the 24" acceptable, and wonder what all the fuss is about. But I know what I need for my photographic work and I didn't see it on three different 24" white iMacs. You probably already know my opinion, but this was a great disappointment to me and you.
 
That screen looks perfectly fine to me. Even zoomed in so it filled the entire screen on my 20" imac al.
 
it's weird how it looks okay but if you use the DigitalColorMeter utility and move it across rainydays' picture of the screen the values are different from the center to the sides, and even the sides are different from each other (using CIE Lab at maximum aperture)

bembol's post is an actual screen capture, so it'll be perfectly uniform

i took a picture of mine and got results similar to rainydays

what's worse is looking at it with a black screen in a dark room, looks like light leaking from the top and bottom!

that being said...

my iMac is the same and I'm absolutely satisfied with it. I'd be willing to bet the 23" and 30" standalone displays are better for precise color work

anyone know if the new iMac screens are fluorescent or LCD backlit? the 15" macBook pro LCDs are noticeably yellow, especially at and angle

I think the Adobe/CS3 crack was more in reference to some of the other icons in the dock... pretty presumptuous and off-topic if you ask me, I'm sure there are plenty of legitimate uses for catalogs of other people's serial numbers
 
the manual says the backlight lamp contains mercury so I guess it's not LED backlight
 
I had my 24" iMac for 3 days now,
and I din't notice any issue with the screen until I read this thread
and started to really, really look at it with all different desktop backgrounds.

But I see nothing like the yellowish / brown tint.
What I see is a slighly lighter area towards the left side of the screen.
I got others in the house to check it out as well,
and they confirm the lighter area, but thats all.

I guess that means these screens are not perfect,
but not similar either...

I'm using this iMac with an 23" ACD, and to me this seems
like a no-problem.

But no eyes works perfect either...;)

About the poll, I guess I have to mark the last button,
but I would like to add :
'I dont have this issue, but I have another'...:D

Before I sent my imac back, I took a few pictures. When I color pick the left side of the screen, it's white, but also pulls up a lot of blue....when I color pick the right side it picks up white, but also some yellow.

Also, it's not blaring, but easy to see the right and left sides are slightly off. Basically the white of a webpage would be so bright on the left side I couldn't take it, but the right side looked fine. Very inconsistent. I will get my replacement tomorrow. It will be my last one, I'll either keep it or sent it back for good.

Ah sorry I forgot to put a note in the original post that the photo isn't of my screen. Since I couldn't find my charger for the camera I snatched the photo from this thread over at Apples discussion forum.

My screen looks exactly the same as in that picture though.

The iMac use fluorescent backlighting since there are no 24" LED screens available yet.

I'm sure many people are fine with it. But for graphics design with a lot of solid colors it is very disturbing. I don't notice it much when I'm editing photos though, mostly in pictures with little saturation.

I do have CS3 Web Premium, and it's fully paid for by the way. Since I make money using it I think it would be rather cheap of me to use a cracked version. So please don't accuse me for that.

keep it, there was a huge thread on this issue a while back, apparently after 20 replacements, the tint couldnt go away :(
 
Mine has a yellowish tint to the right side. To be honest if I up the brightness it goes away. It may be a backlight issue. Will I send it back for that? No as the machine works, has no dead or stuck pixels so why worry.

Well it might be handy for graphics designers and photographers to see the actual color and not several different colors depending on where on the screen you place the object.

I've tried the MacBook+external screen route, but it didn't work for me. I can not justify going with a Mac Pro+screen. The iMac is pretty much the only option for me but this screen makes it pretty hard to work with. And it's annoying to see all these color shifts across the screen.
I'd take a couple of dead pixels over this any day.

So if there are iMacs without this problem, I will keep replacing it until I get one. But if there aren't I will have to try to live with it and buy another one whenever they fix the problem.
