iMac 24" Questions

I am thinking of switching from my PC (which is about 3 years old) to a new iMac 24" 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme, 2GB ram and 1TB HDD when Leopard comes out next month. I plan to get it on finance (UK).

I have a few questions. Is there any known problems with the new 24" iMacs? And, what hard drive do apple use for the 1TB option? I don't fancy changing the hard drive in the iMac myself seeing as it is an all-in-one product.

A small side question: How long does it usual take to receive items purchased with Apple Finance in the UK?

If you browse the forums you will see that many complain about the screen. I have the 2,4GHz 24" which has exactly the same screen as the 2,8 and I am not satisfied even after one replacement. Maybe you will get a perfect one, but I've had problems. I suggest you wait until those who are reporting to have issues with the screen (like myself) get an iMac that actually works as intended. Or go to a store and look at the display - see if it is good enough for you.

Everyone isn't bothered by this though, in fact some people doesn't even notice it.

I have the 2.8 24" and its a great machine, personally I think most of the stuff about the screen is rubbish. Unless you really hate glossy screens then there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. In fact many have pointed out that you can buy the exact same screen on its own for over a £1000.

I thought about the 1TB option, but decided to go for the 750GB and max the RAM to 4GB instead (use 3rd party RAM). I plan on getting a 500GB external for backup with time-machine when it comes out with Leopard. Much more bang for you £ this way round and external storage is cheap.

I would go this route unless you really need the max internal storage. I could only ever see 750GB getting full if I used lots of video camera footage but i can always backup the original films to an external HD and just have the final edits on the internal drive as MPEGs if space gets tight. Other media will never get close to filling the drive IMO.

We have the new 2.8 GHz iMac with the 24 inch screen, 4 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of disk. The complaints about the glossy screen are rubbish, in my opinion. I really like the computer, even the glossy monitor. It works great for me. Of course, my main computer (as you see in my signature) is a bit more impressive, but the iMac works wonderfully for me when I am at home.

I whole-heartedly recommend the iMac. Buy one and enjoy.

It's not about the glossy anymore it's the LCD color concerns. That being said I have the 24" 2.8 as well and love it. Mine looks exactly as the demo at the Apple store and I know that most people on this forum are just plain picky as hell and are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Generally what the picky people will do is place a white background on the screen and then pick apart every little color or backlight discrepancy they can find and then go on the forums and say how HORRIBLE the screen is and that Apple shouldn't put out such inferior screens.
One person starts it and the rest follow.
Anyone that picky shouldn't be looking at an AIO computer at the low price Apple charges. The iMac is the cheapest full featured AIO you can get and the picky people just can't find anything else wrong with it to scare other people that are interested.

The glossy screen I love. My TV has one and it makes blacks look as if it were a CRT monitor.

The issue I have seen on the forum is a yellow tinting of some sort but in the photos I have looked at I just can't see it myself.

Can anyone recommend some 3rd party ram for this bad boy then please? I will not be purchasing it until leopard arrives though.

You can't go wrong with Edge, Crucial or Kingston memory.

Newegg.com don't ship to the UK so I guess I will have to hunt down memory on Scan.co.uk or Overclockers.co.uk.
