hey, i have an interesting issue that i've researched a little bit and still have questions about. thought i'd check here before taking it into an apple store or the campus bookstore.

yesterday i noticed a faint line running vertically on the far left of my monitor. it looked to be just a pixel wide and running nearly top to bottom. the pixels weren't black or any other color, just more faint than they should be. i switched the desktop background and the line stayed there. i restarted the computer and the lines were still there. i shut down the computer for the night (i usually leave it in sleep mode) thinking i would have to take it into the apple store, but when i turned it on in the morning, i couldn't see the pixel line. it happened again later today (and there may have been a tiny second line to the left), but after either restarting/sleeping the computer (don't remember which), i'm not seeing anything strange right now (coming back to the computer after dinner).

i've had display line issues with my mac pro/30" display at work, but in that instance it was different symptoms (colored lines running horizontally that were sporadic) and turned out to be due to a faulty graphics card. this is a different problem and i don't think it's a graphics card issue.

anyone have any ideas what this is? do i need to worry about it unless they become permanent? it's a bit annoying even if it's just something that will come and go. is this something that the apple store will repair or replace? i'd hate to take it up there and have them not be able to see the lines as it seems that they may come and go (as opposed to dead pixels which i imagine would constantly not work and possibly be black/dark). i bought this computer in august of last year, so it's still under warranty (and it reminded me i had better buy the extended apple care!).

any help would be wonderful. thanks.

update: this morning two lines have developed. i noticed that the lines appear on the edge of where i have had an application. in this case today, it was yahoo messenger for mac. interestingly, the lines only appeared where that application's two windows (contact list and downloads) were open. any ideas what the issue might be? maybe i need to not use yahoo messenger? is the problem with the yahoo program?

No, this is a hardware defect affecting thousands of iMacs produced in the last couple of years.

Apple has been sued twice for it already:

Still, they keep sweeping it under the carpet and pretend it's not an issue. I have the same problem, and you can expect having to fight with tooth and nail to get the necessary repairs covered under your warranty. Apple has been very unhelpful in this area.

I don't understand why there aren't more threads addressing this issue here - on the Apple Discussion forums there are hundreds of posts with users experiencing this exact problem.
