Now I got my 24" imac 2 days ago and I love it so far, just ordered 4GB RAM for it :D. However, on the bottom left corner of the screen there seems to be a blemish of some sort. It looks like the light coming from the bottom but not sure. Ive tried to take some pics of it but its quite hard. You can only see it when its on a black screen. Here are some pictures:

Is it a fault with the screen or should I just live with it? You cant see it at all when your just using the computer normally, just when there is black around it, but gets annoying when say watching a DVD which isnt full screen and has black edges.

I've got the prior generation white 24", and while I've heard of a "light bleed" problem, I've never seen it. Your problem certainly looks like that.

That looks like backlight bleeding to me, something a number of Al 24" iMac users have complained about. You should be able to see it in Front Row, and when you use the screen saver "computer name"in Preferences. If it is backlight bleeding it can be irritating trying to watch DVDs in a darkened room as it can affect the picture.

How would I go about fixing it? Is this issue under warranty? I actually brought it from my work (PC World) and we dont currently have anymore in at the moment, so I would rather get Apple to deal with it then take it back and have to wait for a while til we get some more in.

Has Apple acknowledged there is a problem?

if you just got it new, it is covered bumper to bumper for 1 year. YOu can call in to apple for tech support free for the first 90 days. Start on it now and get it taken care of. When you talk to apple, stress the negative impact it has and ask them to fix it.

Yes will do. Will mention the term backlight bleeding. Sorry Ive just done a search for it but didnt for the life of me know what it was called, so thats why I had to start a new thread about it so apologies. I will keep you all updated as to wether Apple say its covered or not. Knowing them, they will probably just say its normal.

Sounds like something a PC World employee would say. :p Apple are actually really good with sorting this sort of thing. By the sound of it I wouldn't bother taking it back where you bought it (good for the discount I imagine, but nothing more!)

You know it actually offends me quite alot when people just assume that everyone who works in PC world knows nothing about computers. My manager in my store is very adamant that everyone who works on sales or customer service knows what they are talking about, and only hires people who actually have the knowledge. If they dont, they are put on Tills. Im not saying its the same across the country, but in my store there are alot of knowledgeable people. The majority of staff who work in my store have built a computer of their own in the past, and know what they are talking about, including me. I know its not the same around the rest of the stores, which is a shame as it gives all of us a bad name, but maybe you should go and have a chat with a sales advisor in your local PCW and see how much they actually know. Just because we are a large chain of stores, it doesn't mean we are full of numties who don't know what we are talking about. Also, alot of people are under the impression we are on commission, which isnt the case at all! We very little incentive bonus for selling items, all the bonuses we get are based around customer service and a mystery shopper.

Sorry to go off on one, but it does slightly annoy me when people come in and assume you dont know what they are talking about. The best thing is when someone comes in thinking they know more then you and then you actually end up confusing by asking them technical questions about their machine and making them feel totally out of their depth :D.

Will give them a call tomorrow.

Nothing like customer service

However, I'd say that I've had more bad experiences than good experiences in the majority of stores that sell tech goods - from phones to computers and including the Apple stores.

Tis a definite problem though with your screen. My 24" doesn't look like that.

Hey, you set yourself up for it with that unnecessary little dig at Apple. Their aftermarket care is a lot better then it needs to be.

Go straight through Apple if you've any issues that PC World can't resolve with a straight exchange (which from what you've said, they cannot offer)

PC WORLD - Would'nt go to them for anything, sorry, but how can anybody believe in a company that has Tech Guys :D

Also building a PC proves nothing, also sorry, that's just putting together a group of objects and you do not need to know about computers as such to do.

PC worlds TV ads do them no favours at all, horrible smarmy people that pertain to know it all. Also some are not even English people in them, and then English voices overdubbed.

Your last Part sums PC World up, try and make the guy buying seem like that he knows nothing so they can be sold second rate cheap computing equipment.

Does your manager also make sure that his employees have a grasp of the English Grammer, read your post.

Sorry to go off on one as you say, but I do not like the fact that you like the sport of making your customers feel out of their depth instead of helping them by correcting their errors and teaching something instead of taking the piss out of them which your :D says.

PC WORLD -NA, your post seals that one for me I'm afraid..........

PS : Thought you had the knowledge and you do not know what backlight bleed looks like, do us favour :D :D

Speak to the Tech Guys :D

Your completely putting my words out of context. I didnt say I do that to every customer, only to people who come in and think they know everything and your just an idiot hired there to work. At the end of the day, if you know anything about computers, you shouldnt be shopping there. PC world isnt aimed at the techno heads, its aimed at the general public, with whom the majority dont know alot about computers. Im not expecting anyone from this website to shop in there, or anyone from any internet forum for that matter. I dont even shop in there, I just work in there. I do agree the tech guys is stupid and the services are expensive (for instance, £30 for a software install!). And im sorry, if you chucked a few parts infront of an average punter and said build me a PC, they wouldnt have a clue. Just because ive never come across a screen that has "Backlight bleeding" it doesnt mean im a complete idiot does it? Sorry that I dont know alot about monitors  but no monitor I have ever had has had this problem.

Anyway, im not here to discuss that, im here to discuss the backlight problem. The reason I said that is ive had a bad experience with Apples Customer service in the past (long story, to do with discolouration on my macbook, twice). I will give them a call today and see what they say.

Back on topic...

I have a similar backlight bleeding problem in the same area, but I choose not to view screens that highlight the weaknesses of the budget cutting screens Apple chose to use.

Basically, I'm not convinced swopping out my otherwise mostly great Mac would result in complete happiness in another model.

And then you have to wait unless you choose to go to an Apple store.

Thats a point. If I took it to an Apple Store, and spoke to a Genius and they agreed that it was a bleeding backlight, would they exchange it there and then?

I'm thinking they'd do that if you bought from there, otherwise it'd be sent in for repair.

By phone, they may just send out a replacement model and take your one in its place.

Looking on the Official Apple Discussions it seems as if alot of imacs suffer from this. It seems that people who have had their imacs replaced 3 or 4 times have had the issue on all of them, so I dont know if its even worth doing anything about it. Its a shame really, when you spend so much on a computer you would expect it to be near then perfect and not have these little problems with them. However, I have had no other issues what so ever with my imac apart from this. No dead pixels or anything, so im starting to wonder if its worth the risk getting a replacement and then having something else wrong with it.

Trust me.... it isn't worth the gamble. Be content with the machine in front of you that kicks the backside of everything that you've had before.

It was only about 5 years ago when we would have paid as much as we did for the entire iMac just to get a screen this big and sexy.

Do what I plan to do. Use it and when they come round for a model renewal consider Ebaying it and upgrading.

It would be interesesting to hear from 24" Al iMac owners who do NOT have this problem with their screen. It is very easy to see. Go into "System Preferences", then "screen saver" then "Computer Name" then press "Test".

glass cover

chaslam, my imac suffered from a similar problem. the problem was the coating they put on the inside of the glass panel covering the lcd. it was replaced at the apple store and that solved that problem. a clue to if this is what your problem is will be with the computer shut off, see if there is an anomaly in that section of the screen under ambient light. hope this helps.
