I know it is not "user upgradeable" but, can an authorized shop upgrade the 24" iMac's video from the 7300gt to something better like the 7600gt or even the newer cards?

It is possible to put a 7600GT in place of the stock 7300GT.. I've done it.

The problem is securing the part, and braving the total tear down of your iMac!
Where the video card is located requires just about every piece of the system to be taken apart :(

It was a fun little task, probably not something I should have done on my only computer, but I the 7600GT is a worthwhile upgrade.

One thing I'd love to try to find is an 8600GT card, I know they come in an MXM-II flavor (which is the size of the card in the White iMacs) and get a donor bios from a MacBook Pro, and just mess with it. I'd be pretty sure it wouldn't work, but it would be fun to try.

Well, I was thinking I could get an authorized shop to get the part and install it. I know it would not be cheap but, it would be a possible way to extend the mac a bit.

Not sure if an authorized shop will do it as upgrading an Apple computer (save for Mac Pros.. and even that's a stretch..) is apparently the most sinful evil thing one person can, or hope to, do.

Never hurts to ask, but yes, it is technically doable.

Where did you get the part?

I am very interested in upgrading my 24" iMac to the 7600. Where did you get the part? I have been searching for a way to do this for ages. I regretted getting the 7300 shortly after purchase.

You might get an 'authorized repair center " to do it, but not Apple.

We took a MacBook with liquid damage to Apple and they wanted $750 to fix it!:eek:

At the Apple store the Tech was cool enough to say .....

'if it were mine I would just replace the ______ '

So I said " cool, sell me the _____ "

He couldn't, so I went to an authorized repair center ( CompUSA ) and the tech ordered the $39 part for me. He woulda installed it for an extra $50.
