Hi,

I'm trying to boot from the Mac OS X Snow Leopard install DVD to install it onto a partition on an external drive, but it just gets stuck at the Apple logo.

Any idea's why?

It will only work if you have one of the updated 10.6.3. SL install DVDs.
The iMac 09 came with a 10.6.2 version. If you have the 10.6 version of the install disc, it definitely won't work, as it would try to install to a Mac that doesn't exist yet (in it's mind.) Stuff like the kernel (for Nehalem based Intel processors) and extensions for hardware like the graphics card isn't present on the 10.6 disc.
