I still have mine unwrapped at home in a big box :D

I wonder if you know what type of 2 TB HDD Apple uses in the newest iMac 27 ?

I know they used the Hitachi in the old, but people complaint about noise from that drive, so wonder if Apple now is using another HDD, WD Caviar Black or Green for instance

Come on ! 25 views and still no answer

It's definitely not a WD Green, since that would be a 5400rpm drive. I haven't seen anything definite, but I'd guess it's still a Hitachi.

Not sure about the 2TB one, but my 1TB HDD is a WD caviar black.

Very quiet :D

It's still Hitachi. It is the only brand that has reasonably priced 7200rpm 2TB drives. Caviar Blacks are way more expensive and Caviar Greens are not 7200rpm (Apple markets the drive as 7200rpm). 1TB Seagates were noisy but I don't think these Hitachis where. People even paid the extra just to get a silent drive instead of a noisy Seagate.

Thanks HellHammer :)

It's my first time since the 90's where I don't feel I have perfect control over what HDD I have in my system - it's a bit of an akward feel

I know I can just remove the glass and the panel and then get access to the HDD, but even a guy like me, who has build my own PC systems for the last 12 years, I don't think I will mess with this iMac until it's at least a year os so old and about ready to be sold ;)

iMac 27 2TB HDD - what brand?

iMac 11,3
27"
i7 2.93GHz
BTO
CA., USA
Service Date: 09/16/2011:

Hitachi 2TB
M/N: HDS722020ALA330
Revision JKOKB35B
7200 RPM

hopes this helps...:)

Not mine. Mine shipped with a WD Caviar black.

Received my 27" about two weeks ago. 2TB drive is Hitachi. Imwould have added a 512 Solid state (which I love in my MBP) but was not available in the iMac.

Replaced an 08 24 iMac that had a 750gb drive. I am not noticing any noise when compared to that one.

But according to your sig, you have 1TB HD. All 2TBs I'm aware of are Hitachis. 1TBs have varied more, thus e.g. your Caviar Black but quite a lot seem to be Seagates

Ah yes, interesting. Thanks for pointing out the differences.

WD Caviar Black 2TB is working for sure!! :D

( I replaced my 1TB Seagate Barracuda with WD`s Caviar Black 2TB and my system is working perfectly fine)

I Googled the M/N for that 2TB Seagate drive and it's only advertised as being a 5900 RPM drive. That sure doesn't seem right, particularly if Apple advertises it being 7200 RPM. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

The link you posted seems to arbitrarily interchange the "5" and the "6" in the drive's model number, but good info nonetheless. I'll poke around Seagate's website to see if I can double-check this.

It's also interesting that System Profiler reports the rotational speed of your drive. Mine (on my late '09 27" iMac w/ 1TB HDD) doesn't but my '09 MacBook Pro does report the speed of my Momentus XT. Go figure.

Nice. Crisis averted. ;)

It's true that all of us having nothing but anecdotal evidence about drives, but I've been very happy with my Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 2 TB drive. This is the consumer drive, not the enterprise one.

It's my main data (not system) drive and I've moved it several times, going between Mac Pros at my different worksites (airline travel, packing it in a backpack). It's never skipped a beat, it's quiet, and it's as fast any other 7200 rpm drive I've had.

Yes, I'm talking about sample size N=1, but most of the drive opinions I read here and elsewhere are pretty much N=1 also.
