My trusty iMac 27 2009 hit the floor after the table collapsed. The glass screen broke. The computer still runs, but after awhile it shuts down. I am guessing that the cooling system was affected. I can run non graphic apps without it shutting down. The hard drive seems fine.

I have opened the Mac before to replace the hard drive so I am familiar with how to get to the inside of the Mac.

Any ideas of what I should look for and is the problem repairable?

Thanks in advance for your help - Sam

Just open the iMac to see what else are broken. But first verify if the tilting mechanism is still working.

I guess the first think to check is the fans and other visible broken pieces.

You can remove the LCD panel and use the iMac on external display to check which fan is spinning and which is not.

Thank you all for your responses. I will soon open the mac to see if I can find any internal damage. I have Mac Fan Control running and and check on the temperatures for the various parts. So far it does not look too bad.

I just wanted to express my condolences. The 2009 ones were a beast. Loved them.

Thanks mabaker - it is still running and I will see if I can find the problem.

I am now ready to take the iMac apart. Can I turn on the iMac with the LCD removed? Naturally, I will not turn it on until I remove the LCD. I want to see if any of the fans have been damaged.

@Nguyen Duc Hieu I think he was just wondering if an iMac can be run without its LCD installed.

@SarasotaSam Yes, your iMac will run just fine without the internal LCD :)

It could be a failed HDD from the fall (corrupted software causing Mac to fail) but that seems pretty unlikely...
