Hi guys, I know there is like a ton of threads on iMac graphic card and upgrades etc. But I have a rather specific situation and I would like some suggestions from experienced people on this case.
So my ATI 6970m 1GB GDDR5 is of course dead! As I it seems a common issue. I live in Croatia that I still consider a 3rd world country and we don not have Apple here, we have authorised resellers and services. Long story short they are sh*t, they cant give any advice and as you all know if they are authorised they need to follow Apple procedure.
So they are asking me 600€ for 6970m old piece of crap.
1. Option...
I have a Asus ROG 501 laptop with a GTX960m 4GB graphic card that I used as a backup/travel machine. So I can say it is expandable. I could dig out the graphic card from it and plug it in to the iMac but first I need to follow a detailed procedure that I never done before and makes me nervous. I dont remember what OS I have since it took forever for the "genius" tech here to contact me with the diagnostics info.
In this case I would transfer my SSD to my firends iMac and install nVidia drivers before i plug in the card in to my Mac.. worst case scenario is I fu*k something up and I have to buy a new card for my laptop.
2. Option...
They are offering me a 512MB 6770... I think... for way less money...
And one guy suggested I use an external bay with a PCI-E card. eGPU. That sounded ok but Im not an expert and I only saw thunderbolt 3 with Type-C connection that my iMac does not have. So the question here is. Did anyone try this on a 2011 iMac?
3. Option...
Buy any other card on ebay hoping it works and... duno!
Any suggestions are welcome and I will get my iMac from the service soon and I can post all info here so you can return input on what and how to do.
