Hello everyone,
I'm seeking assistance with my 27-inch Intel iMac from 2014 (iMac15,1). Here's a brief rundown of my situation:
  1. Initial Issue: My iMac crashed and then failed to boot up macOS. Issue seemed to be SSD having crashed.
  2. SSD Replacement: Based on the diagnostics, I replaced the old SSD with a brand new Samsung 870 QVO 2TB SSD. After the replacement, I was able to start up macOS.
  3. Current Problem: Even with the new SSD, my iMac is crashing regularly, within 30 minutes of running time. The crashes seem random and aren't tied to any specific application or task. I'm trying to restore a backup, but it's impossible due to it crashing.
I'm trying to determine if this is still a disk-related issue, a different hardware problem, or something else I've not identified. If anyone has experienced something similar or can provide insights, I'd greatly appreciate it!

1. Its not the SSD then ....
2. You dont need a special cable to connect the SSD in that model
3. If you are lucky its a ram problem
4. It may be a cooling issue, but
5. worst case its a bad motherboard and you need to replace the imac.

Thank you for the replies, I appreciate it very much!

These are its temperatures in Celsius when idle:
CPU: 80-89°C
GPU: 79-93°C
Logic board: 52-59°C
Memory: 39-53°C
Screen: 29-30°C
SSD: 53-55°C

It seems quite high?

I have not tried taking out the ram yet.

Here’s the current state:

The iMac still crashes. At some points it seems completely random, otherwise it seems to often crash when it goes into sleep mode. Here is the line from the kernel panic report, which according to GPT causes the crash:
Code:
AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager::setPowerState(0xffffff936c4d0900 : 0xffffff8002c63620, 3 -> 2) timed out after 100768 ms

I am now also getting this pop up window on the iMac: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
disk-attached-was-not-readable.png

This is regarding the new internal SSD I installed, which is running macOS. It is obviously readable since it's running macOS? But something's awry here.

Additionally, I've been trying to save my important files on my crashed SSD that aren't backed up. I’ve gotten a SATA to USB converter and plugged in the old SSD to try to recover them. I can open the SSD and browse it, however, it does not allow me to use Finder operations such as move files, copy files, zip files. I’ve tried it on another Mac as well. It gets stuck on “Preparing to copy”. When trying to cancel it, it gets stuck on “Stopping…” instead.

HOWEVER – when uploading files to web services, through the browser, it can attach some files from the drive. It still freezes this way however with many of the files.

So I guess this splits my support query into two:
– How can I restore the files on my crashed SSD?
– How do I stop my iMac from crashing?

Again, I appreciate all the help received here very much. Thank you for taking the time 🙏🏻

Just buy that thermal sensor and install it per YouTube video.

It's a known issue for what you are trying to do.

No need to have us read what you labored to describe.
