I've got a 2017 27" I5 3.8, 32GB, 580 video. I've got some 2160 UHD files (.mkv) downloaded. I've been attempting to play them, via VLC, but, every file is way too laggy/distorted. Does anyone have any suggestions, as to whether/or not, I can use these files. All my other 1080p files (.mkv) have no issues. Any suggestions/solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ...

I will try another player.
Try with IINA.

I'm not sure of how to determine how the files are encoded.
Load the file in vlc and check:

vlc --> Window --> Media Information --> codec details

If it is h.265, that's your problem. vlc is a poor h.265 player. IINA is much, much better. And QuickTime is the best if the file is compatible QuickTime, but .mkv files are not supported by QuickTime. Furthermore QuickTime has other picky requirements.

Thanks for the information. I currently keep the iMac at work. It's a Christmas present for us. I'm slowly putting it together. Just finished adding my Windows stuff. I'll return with my findings. Much appreciated, to everyone.

An update .. Most of my downloaded UHD movies have the following Video Codec - MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) (HEVC), 3840 x 2160. The Audio Codecs vary. But, once I installed IINA, the movies play perfectly, without any dropouts, stuttering, or tearing. Many thanks to everyone, for their suggestions.
