Hey guys,

Had a quick question. I'm on my third 27" stock 3.06Ghz imac that was replaced yesterday. The good news is that so far it doesn't seem to have any of the problems of my previous two 27" imac's.

There is one thing though. A couple of seconds after pressing the power button to bootup there is a brief mechanical sound from the dvd drive like a quick ejecting sound even though there is no cd in the drive. My first 27" imac dvd drive made the sound but the second imac 27" Imac I had didn't. Is this sound normal? Would be curious to know why two out of the three 27" Imac's I had make that noise.

System profiler says my dvd drive is a:

OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H

Would be nice to hear from other Imac 27" owners to see if they have this sound. Peace of mind I guess. Thanks in advance!

In my opinion, this is completely normal. Whenever I restart or wake up my early 2008 iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, it does this right before doing a perfect startup. I'd say it sounds like you have nothing to worry about, however I have not really had the chance to test things out on a 27" iMac, as mine was DOA and I'm waiting for the replacement now.

Call Applecare if you have it...maybe they could tell you if its indicative of a problem or not. Also, the geniuses at the Apple Store are good with these sorts of things. Hope this helps!:)

Perfectly normal

I'm pretty sure this is 110% normal for just about all macs. Both my MacBook and iMac do it. It threw me off when I first got my MacBook, and I questioned it as well. I seem to recall someone suggesting keeping a blank disk in the drive if it really bothers you, but I've grown accustomed to it, and see it as a nice welcoming sound when I wake my macs.

My 21.5" does the same, and it's much louder and harsher than the noise my early 2006 20" made. It's equally noisy when accepting and ejecting CDs and DVDs. According to my system profile, I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N, whatever that is. I'm not worried that it's defective. I think it's just poor quality.
