iMac 27" hard drive failure

Via disk utility, an error appears claiming,

"This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk. See an authoried Apple dealer for more information."

My 1 year warranty expires by the end of this month. How can I make sure that Apple will replace the hard drive and not do some half assed sketchy attempt in hiding the error message?

No need for it. I'll be moving shortly to a remote location in South America so Apple's support won't be possible. I'm trying to squeeze in an appointment some days before the warranty expires.

Call them and report the issue at least...get it on record that you started having the issue on XX day and they should be able to assist, even if your appointment is post the end of your 1 year

I had a bad hard drive on my previous iMac. An authorized service center changed it in a couple of hours - Applecare set that up for me.

Same here. Both Macs I've owned have had failed hard drives (PowerBook and MacBook). Both times they were under warranty and Apple replaced the drives the same day. Just make sure you have a backup as the only thing they'll put back on it is OS X. Personally, I hate spinning mechanical hard drives because of their failure rate. It's not a question of if, but rather when.

iMac hard drive failure

my hard drive failed on my three year old iMac. the genius bar guy said he would have to order a new hard drive, a 500 gb.

I've been reading a lot about hard drive failures on iMacs. I thought apple's were so problem free? It's been a week and the hard drive is still not in.

The weird part is this is such a common part why does an Apple Store (roseville) not have a standard hard drive in stock? my only guess is there are a lot of failures out there and the hard drive is back ordered. very disappointing for a company like apple.

i may go back to PC if this is what apple is all about

Hard Drives fail. Period. As someone above said, its not a matter of if but when. This applies to PCs and Macs and anything with a hard drive (XBoxes, PS3s, iPod classics, etc.).

I've been pretty lucky and never had a hard drive fail on me in any Dell, IBM Thinkpad, or Mac that I've owned. I've had several iPod hard drives and PS3 hard drives fail though.
