I just got my 27 inch i5 imac, and I am pretty pleased with it.

However there are a couple of issues:

There is what seems to be a single bad pixel. Testing with LCD test it shows up as a bright spot only against a black background, I can see no problem on white, red, green or blue.

So the technical question for you techies out there is what is the underlying issue in terms of the transistors etc, is this "dead" or "stuck"?

Looking around these sort of issues seem to be quite common, should I kick off and demand a replacement? My feeling is that given the frequency of these small defects I am best just keeping my unit.

Other thing I had noticed was a crazy sparking usb port. When connecting a usb cable there were visible white sparks, is this all part of the apple aesthetic? or a fault?

Thanks for listening......:)

I am not sure, but I think the pixel you are referring to is a "stuck" pixel.
Mine is black and can also be seen in green, red, blue etc which means that is dead.

Hi Zenor,

Thanks for the reply.

Can't quite get my head round it since its not like one constant color, which is how some folks describe their stuck pixels, really only shows up against black.

Re your dead pixel, are you going to keep your unit?

No, I decided to send it back. Seems like more stuck pixels appeared. I can also hear the 1TB HD beeping as mentioned before.

If the replaced unit also has such issues I will send it back again and request a refund so I can wait for revision B.

The performance is great though, and I really like the new iMac.

OP, I would be more worried about your sparking USB connection. Definitely get that fixed before you ruin the USB-Hub or external USB devices.

sparks flew

quick update re sparking, had a play with the usb ports.
simply connecting a usb cable does not result in sparks. I get the sparks only when I plug in my hp c4780 printer usb cable, and then only when the printer is plugged in, then the sparks are there, so it is more to do with the printer than the imac.

I think I'll try to get a replacement, since my pixel problem is bugging me, pixel perfect cant be that hard?

I just wanted to chime in here. I sent my 27" iMac i7 back to Apple because I only had a single stuck pixel. Sucks, too. Other than that I had a flawless machine, but paying over $2k really makes it necessary to have a flawless machine, in my opinion, so back it went. If I get another iMac with an issue, I will likely do the same - send it back and ask for a refund, then wait a little bit before I get another one.

BUT, I am just hoping that my replacement will be flawless! I really hope so...

Anyway, good luck to you in getting a perfect replacement as well.

Dead pixels are common, 1 out of 11,059,200 pixels is not bad

Apples tolerance is upto 10 in the size of a 10 p coin, even though you may not have a dead pixel on your screen now it can happen over time as you have got 2560 X 1440 resolution X3 for Red, Blue, Green 11,059,200 pixels all flicking between the different colours to make up your picture

Well I guess you have a grounding problem between the iMac & your HP-printer I would definitely get that fixed ASAP.
