Hi All,

Just got myself a new mac today, I am looking to buy either a 1 or 2TB external HDD, and wondered if anyone can make any suggestions based upon features or speed. I am in the UK, have looked on ebuyer at the studio edition WD Mybook which is priced at £136 which doesnt seem bad, but wondered if anyone else had any suggestions.

You can find the Macpower/inXtron Pleiades Super S Combo quad interface enclosure in the UK.

Hurry up and update your sig with your new system! :):)

1TB drives give the best bang for the buck right now, so thats what I would look for. 2TB drives still cost a premium.

pickup whatever is on sale. All drives fail eventually, no matter who they are made by.

i dont want to mess about opening it up, therefore external is the way, i asked for opinions as i want fast, as i already miss my pro for the fact it had 4TB in it.

If you want fast, then you want FW800.

What are you using this external drive for? USB 2 is more than fine for backup.

yes i want a FW800 drive, sorry didn't make that clear. It's going to be used to store my music (dont want it on system drive) its going to have my VM machines on it, and also to be used as a super duper backup.

Well, FW800 might not be any faster, or only slightly faster, than USB for those things. Especially the music and SD backup part.

As to whether or not the VM machines suffer, I guess that would depend on how much drive accessing they do?

Dont get me wrong, I have 4 FW800 devices connected to my iMac, but for pure "storage" (iTunes, iPhoto, etc) I just use a 1.5TB USB 2 drive -- works fine...

well i use 3 usb 2.0 hard drives hooked to my emachine celeron server. i use those drives to stream movies and anime to my mac mini. i dont notice slow down what so ever but i am hardline network cable to it all

ok, thanks for the advice, i've ordered a 1.5TB WD Mybook studio, and I may consider a USB drive for the backups
