is there a fix to this ? the screen looking great! and i don't want to return it if i can fix it some how ....

i got a refurb iMac 27 and is says "airport card not installed" , any suggestions?

The AirPort card is either broken, unplugged or it doesn't exist. Call to Apple and get a replacement, I doubt it can be fixed at home

My god.

Are there any iMac's they are shipping out that are *truly* problem free?

I can't believe my 4th iMac refurb is coming today and all have had a different issue.

You'd think the refurbs would have the issues all addressed!

My refurb 27" has the same problem. I think it is a 10.6.2 related problem and is not a hardware issue. Seems to only affect the i7.

r these airport cards easy to install ? what is the part number of this airport?

Do NOT open the case and take out the AirPort card!!! It voids warranty and you are still inside the 14-day return time so call Apple and get a replacement or let them fix it

There are plenty that are problem free. People generally only voice their opinions when something is wrong not when something is right. So naturally you will find more negative posts then positive posts. That is very true right now because people are on high alert due to the all of the problems. My friend just purchased one 3 weeks ago and his is problem free. No screen yellowing, grey bands, HD issues, etc.

Fair enough, but a Senior Supervisor at the Apple Online store customer support department told me yesterday that the iMac 27" issues have definitely been the most widespread of any Apple product...ever.

From the horse's mouth.

I think people are right to be on "high alert" given the circumstances, don't you?

don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you. More or less just saying that there are good machines out there. I am lurking around the iMac forums throughout the day reading all of the testimonials. I'm sitting on the money for one until I feel it's safe to purchase. I am the owner of 3 macs that have all had some type of problem. I'm not going to let that happen this time. It would be interesting to see a consumer report on the current failure rate of these machines. That would say more than a few voices on these forums.

If you haven't already, install all the latest software updates (for everything).

If this doesn't fix it, make an appointment at your nearest Genius bar, or contact Apple support number. You do have a 14 day 'satisfaction' guarantee, plus 90 days (IIRC) free phone support, and a 1 year warranty to use, so why not?

I had the same problem with my iMac 2,8GHz (no airport card installed). There's no software fix and they have to send you a new one. If you ask you can keep the old one meanwhile.

I also got a 100€ refund for the trouble, which I wanted to use for an upgrade to a 2Tb hard drive. However they can't make that happen through Aftersales, because they have to charge me again. So I had to place a new order, which will also take 10 days, because they ship from Shanghai. Apple Europe is really disappointing. :(

There is a super quick fix for it.

It involves deleting a config file and rebooting the system.

The system will then auto-recognize the hardware again and it will work flawlessly.

I had the same problem and found the answer online. I'll post back up if I can find the solution again.

I've been going back and forth with Apple tech support for this issue on my refurb 27" i7 iMac which was delivered last Monday.

So far they suggested:
1. PRAM reset
2. Unplug, wait 45 seconds, plug in and restart. nada
3. boot from Grey Disc#1, run the network profile (?) located in the same menu as disk utility....no airport card seen
4. boot from grey disc #2 holding down the D key. I could not into the diagnostic mode through this method and gave up at this point and decided to opt for an advance exchange.

Apple shipped a replacement refurb 27" i7 to me today, I'll move my data over to it, and return the broken machine.

I'm still not convinced that this is a hardware problem...although if Apple was replacing the screen on the refurbs maybe techs forgot to plug in the airport wires...

This could very well be a 10.6.2 problem as I read on the Apple discussion board where one person sadi reverting back to 10.6.1 fixed things. I tried booting off of my retail Snow Leopard CD but the iMac would not boot from it (normal). Apple is probably going to release 10.6.3 early next week and it will fix this issue. :D

Did you find the file?

Hi there did you find the config file that fixes this issue. I have a new i7 6 weeks old and there is no airport card from what I can see. Have tried numerous things and tomorrow it is going back to Apple - 2000km away to be fixed.

Mine is. I think. Its been waking up on its own but I've been told that's an easy problem to fix. Haven't yet because I want to get a backup drive before I reset anything, just in case.
