iMac 27" i7 weird superdrive

This is my second iMac, so I know how it works. But for some reason this new one doesn't work like it should?

In that, it doesn't "eat" the disc. It doesn't even do anything even tho I inserted the disc all the way in? Is it broken? Or is this a new kind of superdrive where you have to stick it way in yourself?

At first I thought, maybe there's no superdrive at all? But system profiler says its a PIONEER DVD-RW DVRTS09.

Disk problem maybe?

That sounds like the disk isn't recognized by the drive. Like inserting a blank disk when it expects one with something on it. Or like something wrong with the drive, Heaven forfend.

Check System Preferences, under Hardware "CDs & DVDs". If you have the options to ignore any media you insert then it would seem like there is nothing in your Mac.

I would try to change the media if that does not work, there are some brands that do not work as well with some super drives, I personally use Verbatim and Philips.

DVD media

We use Taiyo Yuden DVD's, which we purchase from http:/www.supermediastore.com. They are the most likely to be compatible with any given DVD drive, in both our experience and that of many other people we know. One can't expect the store brand ones to work well, and TDK is OK ONLY if made in Taiwan. Verbatim is said to be very good; I can't say anything about Philips. Firmware upgrades to the DVD drives are helpful, which explains why newer DVD players generally work with more types of discs.
