PROBLEM:
iMac 27" (July 2010) with Core i5 Quad could not detect a Mushkin Callisto 240GB SSD at startup (not even with Disk Utility)
SOLUTION:
1) Create an image of the current working installation of OSX from the HDD. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to do this. You may even avoid the next step.
2) Insert the SSD into a USB/FireWire 2.5" drive dock like the BlacX from Thermaltake.
3) Fire up Disk Utility. You should be able to see the SSD listed on the left.
3a) Select the SSD, erase it, and give the volume a name. Ie. Macintosh HD.
3b) Go into the Images menu, choose Scan Image to Restore and select the image that you just created.
3c) Click on the Restore tab.
3d) Browse to the image that you just created.
3e) Click and hold onto the SSD volume (Macintosh HD) and drag it to the second box (in the Restore tab).
3f) Click Restore and wait til it's done. This might take a long time depending on how much data you have on your current drive.
4) Install the SSD into the iMac or Macbook. You should be good to go, but cross your fingers.
