Can anyone confirm if the MiniDisplay port on the recent 27 inch iMacs support audio with the right adapter? And if yes which adapter would work?

These links indicate that it does support audio:

I need to get one of these adapters and it would be nice to know whether I'm going to have to get one of the ones with the separate USB audio cable or not. It would obviously be nice not having to use up one of my USB ports and would be cheaper as well.

unless there was a recent firmware update, the late 2009 imacs don't output audio from the mini-dp. i'm wondering if that knowledge base article is accurate or what changed to say that the imac does now.

I'm still wondering the same. But so far I haven't been able to find out. I'm kind of surprised that more people aren't asking about this.

I have been asking this question for weeks and getting varying responses. Finally, I typed minidisplay output into the help menu- unbelievably, one of the topics is Playing HD audio and video from a mac on a HDTV. It steps you through the process of working out whether your mac supports it and how to configure via the utilities folder.
In saying this I have bought an adaptor that is supposed to support sound and haven't had any success.
Next step is to try the minidisplay to HDMI cable without adaptor from monoprice.com.
Anyone tried that cable?
