iMac 27" screen quality vs Full HD TV via HDMI from a hi-spec Notebook

Which one is better for watching movies and photos?

On the LCD TV, let's say that I'm using
-Sony Vaio F with i7, 1GB video card NVIDIA, Full HD, HDMI + Full HD LCD TV

Of Course the Vaio has higher spec than the iMac 27", but it's primarily for watching movies and photos.
And the iMac has a higher resolution of 1440 vs 1080

Which one do you think is better?
Can the iMac be my HD TV?

Quality wise, which one is better?

or maybe should I change my question to .... which TV is equal to iMac 27" display?
What should I consider? Contrast ratio? Frame rate?

Hey there,

from my POV the iMac 27" has a fantastic display. you can not compare it to any of these Full HD TVs because the iMac has xHD resolution.

This means
2560px*1440px = 3686400
compared to
1920px*1080px = 2073600

so the iMac has almost 78% more pixels than a Full HD TV. You will surely see this when looking at photos, but there is no xHD movie content out there.

If the size 27" is enough for you, go with the iMac. Otherwise maybe Mac Mini + HD TV?

A Core2Duo processor runs fast enough for 1080p.

What you need to understand is that a computer monitor and television monitor have two different purposes. A computer monitor is designed to pack in pixels tight and be viewed from a close distance. Televisions are designed to display video content at a distance of around 5-15ft. If you move up close to an HDTV, you can see the pixels and the image is blurry. If you back more than 5 feet away from a computer monitor, it's hard to see anything.

In a nutshell, if you want something to be a screen for your living room, you can get a much larger television set for less than the price of a 27inch iMac. A television, also, would not work well on your desk. The extra pixels on the 27inch do not help quality, because no video content goes above 1920x1080. Get the item that is designed for what you need.

Like the first reply said, if all you are doing is consuming content, it really doesn't matter how good the computer is, it will display the content exactly the same.

So buying a top end laptop just to plug it into a TV is kinda...redundant.
