iMac 27 upgrading to SSD, few questions...

I'm planning to upgrade my iMac 27 for SSD (intel x25-v).

and I asked apple authorized service center and they answered like this,

If it is installed by a certified technician, the warranty will be unaffected, other than the fact that the customer's hard drive is not covered.


We would need to make sure it is a 3.5" Hard Drive and not a 2.5" notebook sized hard drive because even though the connector is the same, different amounts of power are given to each, and the part that holds the drive in place inside the iMac will only fit a 3.5" desktop sized drive.

Costs:
$85.00 to install the SSD
$85.00 to transfer the data from the old drive to the new

and I think they haven't done this upgrade before...

also wonder if they know the temperature sensor things...

There are only very few 3.5" SSDs which are quite expensive so... Hundreds of people have installed 2.5" without any problems though

do it yourself and take the hard drive out if the system ever fails. it's really like a 10 minute procedure to do the install. check ifixits teardown to see it's really not hard at all!

you should use the optidrive bay to put your ssd just get adpt. and leave your 1tb for storage.
you can boot imac from ssd drive.
if you want pictures just shoot over your email.

if i do it by myself, what's gonna happen to my apple care??

do they ever know if i have opened it??

i'm just worried if it's gonna void my apple care;;;


if i do this by myself and there is absolutely nothing wrong on imac,
am i okay with my apple care??

There is no official word from Apple but the general rule is that if you break something while doing it, it will void it but otherwise it won't. If you ever send it to repair, make sure to put original HD and RAM back so Apple can't whine about that

totally agree, after all if done properly then it is no different to any authorised repairers done.

there was a thread recently where someone had sent in their intel ssd with the MBP and it got changed and replaced for the stock model during repairs. Apple are not under any obligation to send your stuff back so take this advice well.

the silvertone is fine and cheap, amazon has it for 7 or 8 bucks it will work.
You should know if you change the HD in the imac 27 (3.5 hd) , it has a temp sensor wire that you have to short out or your fans are going to run high at all times. better do some homework before you go into your imac.

it will go full speed if you don't replace with the same manufacturer there is a list of drives that will work.
