iMAC 27inch 2011 External Display

Quick question:
I purchased a minidisplay port to HDMI cable from Amazon and plugged into my 2011 iMAC's thunderbolt cable, and then plugged into my DELL notebook.

Pressed CMD F2 and nothing happens. Could someone please let me know what I am doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry but I don't think that will work as the 2011 iMac (to the best of my knowledge) can only be used as a target display with another Mac via a thunderbolt to thunderbolt connection (not the mini display port cable option you've tried).
