I am considering the purchase of a 20" iMac core duo. For memory I was thinking about going for 1GB. Now my question is: how much faster is 2x512 going to be than 1x1024 and is it really worth sacrificing the possibility of a future upgrade to 2GB?

Some kind person on MacRumors did run benchmarks a while ago; the difference was just about measurable (a few seconds on a 15 minute benchmark run), but not noticable. The money you lose when you upgrade from 2x512 to 2x1GB and have two unused chips will be _very_ noticable in your pocket.

Go for the 1GB dimm, it only cost you about 10 bucks more and you still have a free port!
EXACTLY, then you always have the option of maxing it out sometime in the future.
