iMac 3.06 Ghz with 1TB HD. More heat???

Hey guys,

I am planning to order the new iMac 3.06 Ghz with 1TB HD. I know from my own experience that you can never have much storage space and that you will need it in the future.

But can anyone tell me whether the heat production of this iMac 3.06Ghz with the largest HD will be much more than the iMac 2.93Ghz with 640GB HD and the same graphic card Ati 4850HD???

I am worried about the fact and the iMac will produce much more heat and thus become more noisy than the 2.93Ghz model...
Can you help me with this problem???

All models have been tested, so it shouldn't have any heat problems. 0.13GHz difference isn't big enough to produce too much heat and I've never heard that the size of HD has something to do with heat. 640GB and 1TB both are 7200RPM and 3.5"

I think you quoted someone's quote but just for the record the GDDR3 RAM runs at 1066 MHz.

My experience with this new 3 ghz model is that it runs as cool if not cooler than the earlier 3.06 GHz machine (a 500 GB HDD vs this 1 TB HDD).

Contrary to what some might think (or post) the 1 TB HDD vs the others does make a difference when considering heat, and here is why. These 1TB drives Apple is using are Western Digital Caviar Blacks. Very nice drives indeed and yes it runs at 7200 RPM like all the rest. But it has a larger cache at 32 MB vs the other smaller HDD which sport cache's half that size. Also, and the biggest reason why these drives may run a bit warmer but faster as well, is that they have 2 hard drive processors on it - vs all the rest with only 1 processor.

It's these 2 small yet significant differences that make this drive run faster but also most likely a bit warmer. Nothing that is going to break these imacs by any means - for what it's worth I still have not felt the top of the display on this model get as hot as the earlier 3 ghz model would get.

In summary it would seem the increased efficiency and lower power draws of the newer models seem to have these new bigger faster better models overall run as cool if not cooler than previous less powerful machines with smaller HDD. In my opinion it's these often behind the scenes and unnoticed nuances that don't get enough credit for making big differences in any technological upgrade.

My previous generation 3.06Ghz iMac with Western Digital 500GB HDD and nVidia GeForce 8800 GS. It has been running closed to 6 hrs.

I cannot say for the current 3.06Ghz crop with 1TB HDD.

These 1TB drives Apple is using are Western Digital Caviar Blacks.

I had considered buying the smaller drive, and getting a WD Caviar Black and installing it myself. Did the cost comparison and just bought the upgrade instead, hoping they didn't use the Deathstar or something. Have they said they're using the WD? that's great!

I'm wondering how he knows that they are using the WD Caviar Blacks. Can any new iMac owners with the 1TB option post a screenshop of the "Serial-ATA" section of System Profiler? If the "Model" is WD1001FALS then it is the Caviar.
