Having just bought the above machine from the Apple Refurbished Store I am now wondering if this was the right thing to do as I have seen some threads about Throttling and Fan Noise on this machine.

Do you think that I would have been better off getting the 2020 i7 with the Radeon Pro 5700 + 8GB?

I do a lot of work using VMWare Fusion and SQL databases.

Thanks!

I'd recommend trying what you bought and see how you feel about it. I assume Apple provides the same 15 day return period for refurbished machines. If it gets too loud or throttles or underperforms, then I'd return it and get a 2020 model.

You can download the Intel Power Gadget utility and watch your CPU behavior while running your VMware VMs. Only reason I say this is you probably spent a lot less on your setup than you would for the 2020 model.

Thanks @Jordan Klein for your reply.

Yes - I think that is the best thing to do. The machine is covered by the standard 15-days return policy. Assuming that I went for the i7 2020 model with the Radeon 5700 XT and 16GB the saving is about $1K.

Ended up cancelling the order - I did not realise that you could not take the stand off and Vesa mount it!

Looks like I will have to buy a new one with a Vesa mount.
