The volume is too loud. I have it on the lowest setting but it's too loud. I went into system preferences and adjusted it to lowest possible setting. This doesn't sound right.

Odd. When I set mine to the lowest volume it's quite quiet. Are you listening to a song in itunes? Most programs that play audio have an in app ability to adjust the sound (a little bar you can move right/left).
Have u also tried to lower the volume by holding shift+alt vol up or down? It let's u fine tune the volume in lower increments that default.
Hello Zombierunner... just wondering if you solved your volume problem as I am experiencing exactly the same issue and its quite annoying as when I post the music tracks I have made they are much quieter than they sound on my 27" imac... any ideas? thank you..
