Hi out there

I am experiencing something weird with my all new iMac 5k late 2015 1Tb fusion. The sound disappears when i connect my Sennheiser HD700 headphones. When i try to adjust the volume, it just shows a cross in the speaker logo. I have tested with my Apple headset, the output itself work just fine.
The impedance of the HD700's is 150ohm, that is not even in the tough range, and my old iMac 27 late 2009 handled them with ease.

Do you experience same behavior with big over ear headphones?

I must say i am quite disappointed with my 5k compared to my old 27" iMac. It does not support my IR remote, and neither my headphones . . . . :(

A really curious problem...

Do you have a spare headphone cord extension laying around to attach and see if it is incorrectly detecting what kind of jack is plugged in? Perhaps it thinks it's a mic headphone combo.

I agree with achtomas' post above.

I'm wondering if the shape of your headphones' plug might be "different enough" (from the norm) to either:
a. not fully engage the jack, or,
b. be switching the jack into "digital" mode (hence, no analog audio output).

Do you have an extension cable (male plug on one end, female jack on the other) that you could try?

Do the headphones start working that way?

hi both

Thanks for your answer. That was a really good point there! I havnt thought about the shape of the headpone 3.5mm jack. I found an extension cord and tested, and it seems to be the solution! Thanks!

OP:

Good to see you got it functioning that way.
Sometimes a simple "workaround" works better than "higher-tech" solutions.

What works, works...
