So I have two iMac 27" from 2015 and 2017 that features the 5K panel. The computers both work perfectly but they are somewhat limited to older operating systems, if not using open core legacy patcher (sigh, I wish Apple wasn't so driven by enforcing e waste.)
As there are some controller boards made to modify these machines to instead work as monitors, or both as monitors for other computers and the internal one I am also curious about this! Apples 27" Studio display is about 2000 dollars, each and adds nothing I need honestly. And as I already have the screens the boards for around 200 dollar each makes for a quite cool investment. Im going to try to de laminate the screens from the glass as one glass unfortunately shattered but I do see this as a good thing as I really would prefer a much smaller frame around there screen anyway.
So, my question now is, which board should I pick? As they have been around for some years there's been a few updates and there seem to be several different producers of similar but different boards. Early ones, and some still, require if using DisplayPort that two cables be used whereas some that are newer higher version of dp protocol itself (1.4 I believe) requires just one. Not sure about HDMI support for 5K but that would also be good as I plan to use these screens for many different things.
For me USB-C is not necessarily most important as I prefer screens that does NOT try to power the computer. Don't get me wrong, that is great for some users but having three screens on my desk usually means that I already have something that will power the computer. I have also noticed that my different thunderbolt docks have been going crazy warm when used with my old 5k ultrafine screen. That screen is now sold though due to some issues with the color around the edges in the end.
Anyway, I am sure some of you have done these mods and have clever insights and ideas to share. Im curious and happy to read what you might have done!
I am using studio speakers and already have a tracking webcam so I have no need for a silly studio display or XDR display more than my laptop as its XDR is at least 120 hz and awesome enough in that sense
