Purchased in Mid-2015, iMac 5k Late 2014 with 3TB Fusion Drive running El Capitan

Got a notice from DiskWarrior that the drive was running at 64 C and failure was imminent.

Ran Disk Utility and it said SMART was fine. DiskWarrior still says it's too hot.

I unplugged all externals except a keyboard. SMC reset. PRAM reset. DiskWarrior rebuild. Full defrag with iDefrag. Blew out the back fan with compressed air.

After all this, installed Temperature Gauge and while doing nothing on the system the hard drive is averaging 59-65. The "safe" line in TG is 60 C for the hard drive.

AppleCare is still good on this. I don't think I should be forced to take my own third-party measures (pushing fans to max, blowing a fan next to the computer). The environment is cool. I don't game or run anything particularly harsh. Web browsing, email, and Sketch (and my Sketch files are not that big either). And like I said, it's hitting 60 C+ with just the system.

So will Apple replace the hard drive or the computer if I take it in and can show that it is hitting those temps without anything running except the system? Even though their own Disk Utility doesn't notice anything? Or will it have to be more extreme than 64C hard drive?

If there is something physically wrong with the drive to cause the overheating they will and at the very least they should disassemble it and clean it properly for you if it's just a case of built up dust.

There's only so much you can clean out with compressed air in the vent.

I seem to recall the HDD in my previous Late 2013 iMac regularly running in the high 60s and 70s.

That's helpful to know. Can any other iMac users confirm their HDD temps? From what I know, above 60C is fry zone for a HDD.

Should also add it did shut off randomly about a month ago, not sure if it was the temperature auto shut off or not. I didn't have DiskWarrior installed at the time so I wasn't getting SMART notices.

Why are you spending timing worrying about this? Make an appointment at your local Apple store and let them test your system and fix if necessary. Why pay for Applecare if you don't use it?

Because I'm anticipating going in, having them blow some dust around, say that I must have some buggy software, and then have the computer fail a day after Applecare expires. Based on past experience. I already have an appointment later today.

So if anyone has some experiences with temps etc. that would be helpful. iDefrag is now telling me that the disk has to cool down every 1-2 minutes. It's hitting 68C temps on target disk mode running iDefrag.

I had a cheese grater Mac Pro still going strong from 2006 to 2016 when I sold it. But I've had nothing but problems with newer models where they try to fit a country into a tiny slim case.

THIS!!!!

Time and again we get people posting things like; 'my fans are running crazy what do I do?', 'my mac makes a weird knocking sound, what do I do?', 'my mac has billows of smoke coming out, is that normal?', 'My mac is bleeding human blood out of it's usb ports, what should I do?'.

For gods sake people, if the thing is still under warranty, why on earth are you even wasting time posting on a forum. Take the damn thing in.

To the thread starters post above, I hear you, it can be annoying if they just blow you off. But in those cases you need to be persistent and adamant. If that apple tech tells you it's nothing, press him on it and say you think he's wrong and want to talk to the manager. Elevate it.
