This issue hasn't really bothered me until now because I'd like to install Snow Leopard on my iMac, which has to be installed from the DVD, of course.
It's the first-gen aluminium iMac (7,1) 20-incher.
Out of the blue a while ago the SuperDrive stopped working. It takes in and ejects discs with no problem, but it can't read any of them. The discs don't even spin upon insertion... All that happens is that the laser moves in and out (perpendicular to the disc) trying to detect it, but fails. The laser's movement in and out makes a repeating noise that sounds like a mix between a 'click' and a 'thud', roughly twice per second.
I have a lens cleaning disc, but it's no good since the disc won't move when inside the drive.
Has anybody experienced the same or similar issue? I'm open to trying any sensible suggestions. I don't want to have to take it into Apple since the warranty expired ages ago.
Thanks in advance for any help.
