iMac 8,1 doesn't boot

I had some perfomance issues today with my iMac 8,1 (OS X 10.5.8) an tried to reboot it. Bad idea.... Nothing happened except for the flashing folder symbol. :mad:

Hardware Test told me: Error 4MOT/1/40000003:HDD-1327 and accordingly 4MOT/1/40000003:HDD-1339 (in two separate passes).

What to do now?

I tried steps 2 - 5 without any succes before... BUT: I forgot resetting SMC.

After resetting the SMC my iMac startet again. Everything's looking ok until now... Next step is a further BackUp!
 
I did only manual Backups for most important data in the past (Sync with iBook) because i did not have a big external HDD yet.

But: I was ordering a new big external HDD just a few minutes ago. So future backups will automatically be managed with TimeMachine.

4MOT would be a fan failure the HDD probably indicates it is the hard drive fan. It may have failed or may just be full of dust either way it is probably causing the machine to overheat.

You could try vacuuming the back air vent to remove the dust, or use a can of compressed air.
 
When you get your external, partition it so that you can install OS X in it. Then try booting from it and see if the issues persist. If not, then your HD is going bad.
 
I tried to sync most important data with my iBook last night... 5 hours and x attempts later i gave up... Syncing (via WIFI) brake off every single time. :mad:


Generallly: Is it possible to clone HDD in target mode?
