So on Saturday, I got a kernel panic. I did the restart, and when I came back I had a white screen, and a flashing folder with a question mark, so I restarted again, and got a white screen. After searching google, I found out the flashing folder meant my startup disk could not be found. I booted off my mac os x dvd and went to the start up disk, and my hard drive wasn't listed. I then went into disk utility and my hard drive was there, but first aid failed.
So I assumed it was time to reformat and reinstall. First I tried to do a restore from time machine, and although my time machine drive was listed, the next screen where you choose what backup to go from, had no back ups listed... So I reformatted and reinstalled. Luckily I could just go into the time machine drive, and transfer all my files over that way.
So I got everything all set back up last night and went to bed. I get up this morning, and my mac is asleep. I wake it up, and I can hear the whoosh it makes when it wakes back up, but it goes to my screen saver, in a static state. No pressing or moving of the mouse or keyboard will get it to go past that. So I had to do a hard restart again! It came back up, I ran disk utility and verified the disk, and verified/ repaired the disk permissions. All seemed ok. So I started doing stuff, and every little bit, I could hear the hard drive making clunking noises, like it was working (even though I didn't have anything running) and the beach ball would come up and I would have to wait for a minute before I could do anything. If I started using an app, after a minute, it would stop responding. Finally the whole thing just froze up. I had to do a hard restart again!
Got the flashing folder again, booted off the dvd, and this time it let me choose my hard drive to boot from, I restarted and here I am. Has this kind of thing happened to anyone else before? Is my hard drive dying? It's SMART status says its verified, but this is getting annoying. I've already lost all my safari bookmarks, and I don't want to reset my time machine drive, incase it dies again and I lose all that data, which makes me not want to do any real important work on the mac, since I might just lose it aswell!
Any thoughts?
After I typed this up, I tried to quickview a video file, and the chunking noises started again, then the beachball. I opened activity monitor and finder is not responding, so I opened the force quit to restart it, but the beachball came up, and in activity monitor, now the loginwindow is not responding! What the frak is going on with my mac?!
