Welcome to macrumors
Are you talking about an airport card? Or an airport base station? One of them is a card that you put in your computer to get wireless internet, and the other is a wireless router.
Anyways, it sounds like you would need to purchase a wireless router to use along with your ntl modem to get wireless internet. your modem would plug into the wireless router, and your wireless router would plug into the computer. Then you could get a wireless signal on your mac, after you set up the router.
Another thing, if you wanted to have a wired internet connection, then you could just get another modem for you room, but for a wireless connection, you are going to need a wireless router.
BTW, which imac are you looking to get?

thanx man it sounds like what i need is the base station thing then. .. im getting a iMac 20" 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo, but it will be a few weeks yet, i just want to get everything sorted so i can get straight online when i get it.
thanx for ur help.
