iMac aluminum questions?

ok so at the moment i use a powermac g4. (dualie 500mhz 512 ram) tiger
I was new to macs around 3 years ago and decided to buy an older one.
it is fine for what tasks i do,(browsing,major ebay seller,
but i have noticed that it is slowing down day by day and i think it maybe a good idea to get a refurbished imac.
everyday i see the box "your startup disk is full"
and im just to lazy to buy another harddrive.

i have an apple aluminum cinema display so the 20" size is good for the imac

I have heard that the 20" refurb from apple for 999.00 is slow and not great,
is that true?

is the performance from the imac comparable to the mac mini

i think that the 999.00 is a pretty good deal, and i think that it may be good for my tasks.


main question.
will i see a definite improvement in speed from the slow powermac to the new imac?

and it the price worth it?

Uhhh- yes, you will see a major speed increase coming from the PowerMac. When people say it is "slow" they are just whining that it a bit slower than the absolutely fastest CPUs available today. It will still blow a 6+ year old PowerMac out of the water!

Let's put it this way: you can edit HD video in real time on that iMac. Is that fast enough?

for a few more hundred dollars it seems like i could almost get the imac.
and i wouldn't' have to purchase another keyboard mouse and i already sold my old isight.

I was thinking the same thing. The mini is such a low value, when for just a bit more you get KB, mouse, non-integrated graphics, nice big screen, easier RAM upgrades, etc. Personally, I would get the iMac, and sell the ACD, or leave it with the PowerMac and give the kids a nice web machine / movie & music player. (If you have kids - which I do, so that is basically exactly what I did with my 20" ACD and PowerMac (dual 867) when I got my iMac).

500.00 is alot cheaper for me than 1,000.00

i don't really need a powerful computer and the powermac works good now
so maybe i should just buy the mac mini

i see that their resale value is fairly well.
i may as just well order the one for 499.00
but that doesnt include a superdrive which i really would need

are there any other options?

is the 1.83 core duo 2 a good machine?

does any one have that and does it work well?
 
I recently bought one of the refurb iMacs that you're talking about.

Works fine for me. I edit some videos (completely amateur), play some light games, and do a some of the stuff you were talking about.

Sure, it's not the fastest machine out there, but it's plenty powerful.

My daughter has a 1.66GHz Core Duo mini and it does most things very well. It even plays some games half decently. For a kitchen machine, and since you already have a 20" display, I'd think it would suit your needs fine. Just be warned the new minis are likely to be announced soon.

For your uses, the base Mini would be a great upgrade. You'll love the speed increase. You don't need anything more than Intel Integrated if you're not going to be playing any demanding games (though games like CS:S plays well in DX7 or 8 mode in WINE).
