So I am currently using modo401 and thinking about learning cinema4d. I am using a mac pro 2008 quad and it is fairly good for a novice 3d user like myself. I am more interested in the product viz so animation won't come into it probably much if at all (just still images) I am wondering if the current 27" imacs are up to the power for 3d these days?

Yes, they are, unless you have really complex scenes with lots and lots of polygons (millions after millions).

I could even use 3D Studio Max in VMWare Fusion and open a highly detailed model on an older 2GHz Mac with a 128MB GPU and it was quite alright.

Thanks a lot! I am slowly planning my future and the iMac seems very fitting

Depends on how long u plan to use it.
2yrs after u buy it will it still be able to used the latest 3D program?
