I just purchased the i9 with 580x iMac. Down the road if the 580x isn't cutting anymore would adding an eGPU utilize both cards? What is the disadvantage? Is it only 10-15% less performance? I would really only be using Lightroom and photoshop, so in the next 4 years I doubt the GPU would be to much of a concern even though the 580x is already a 2 year old card.

You will need to use an external monitor attached to the eGPU in order to utilize the eGPU, until Adobe decides to support eGPUs. You cannot use your internal monitor on your iMac to utilize an eGPU for an application that is not specifically designed to support one.
