iMac and MacBook hand in hand...

I was contemplating getting a new MacBook to replace my first gen CD 1.83ghz, but after looking at the iMac I'm thinking I'd like to pick up on of them for home use and just keep using my old MacBook when at class, etc. My question though, is there a way to keep the information on the two machines the same, particularly bookmarks, mail, and maybe just a single folder with schoolwork and current projects in it. Thanks!

Bookmarks would be as simple as exporting them from Safari or just copying the Bookmarks.plist from ~/Library/Safari.

Most mail is stored on a remote server so you'd just have to setup your e-mail again on the new Mac.

Synchronizing a folder might be a little more work.

Migration Assistant would help move a lot of your data from your user directory over to a new Mac.

Gosh that sounds complicated! I'd think that Apple would have a more user friendly and simplified method for this sort of thing.

It's called .Mac.

To transfer the filed from the MacBook to the iMac you'd need a storage medium, an iPod would be very ideal.

Then you export you bookmarks to the iPod, which is now acting as a HDD. Also copy your 'Mail' & 'Mail download' folders found in /Home/Library as is to the iPod HDD as is. Repeat for your Schoolwork folder.

When you get the iMac connect the iPod to it and launch safari, choose import from file and select the bookmark file from the HDD. Also copy your mail folders to the same location on the iMac and repeat for your school work folder.

To keep things in sync you'd need to either get .Mac or link both computers via Wi-Fi/Ethernet with file sharing enabled on both and simple drag and drop. If using IMAP in mail then you have no problems there as the server gets synchronized with both computers
