Note: I am not sure if this should be placed here or in the OS X section because I honestly do not know where the problem is.
I have a 4 month old iMac Aluminum. The first month or two, everything was heavenly sweet. The last few weeks however have been pretty annoying, my iMac is constantly "freezing" "stalling" "pinwheeling" whatever you want to call it.
some examples:
1. listening to music in iTunes, when suddenly the playback stalls for 5-10 seconds for no reason at all.
2. browsing the web and the browser just stops responding.
3. copying files to my backup drive and the file copy stalls, then resumes, then stalls, then resumes.
4. Tonight, i was trying to copy my home directory to my backup drive so that I could reinstall OS X, the folder is about 50gig going over a USB 2.0 wire. Finder quoted it at about 1-2 hours. But again, the system kept stalling. 4 hours later, the file transfer stopped because it couldn't move a file.
As an added bonus, the last few weeks I have also been met with a "?" folder when I have rebooted my computer. I even decided to bite the bullet and reinstall OS X without my complete backup, problem was the OS X install disk could not find my hard drive!
I have an extended applecare warrenty so I called applecare about this, they told me to make sure my target startup disk was correct
Disk Utility shows everything is "A-ok" with permissions, but I am at a total loss here.
Could it be overheating?
