Hi,

VIDEO
I plan on using my iMac as the hub of a home theatre to play all my movies/DVDs. It will be connected to a
optoma hd200x projector

I'm hoping to do this with a minidisplay to HDMI cable.

AUDIO
Audio will go through to an external decoder/receiver which is connected to my 5.1 system. This will be done with an optical cable.

1: How does this sound? Will it all work? potential problems?

2: Can the iMac output DTS through the optical out?

Any advice or comments welcome! :)

Sounds fine to me. I'd recommend buying one of these all-in-one deals just to make sure everything works properly, although separate optical audio and DisplayPort-HDMI adapters should also do the trick. Good luck!
