Well, I am about to get a 21.5" iMac and have been told by countless people to get Apple Care. With that said I have a few questions. First, is it $169 for one year or for the "up to 3 years" detailed in the description? Second, it says up to 3 years so after those 3 years are over can I buy another Apple Care pack for the iMac and extend the coverage for another 3 years? Thanks for your time and help.

Applecare extends service to 3 years. You can't buy another package to extend for another 3 years.
169 extends your 1 year warranty to 3 and no, you cannot get another extension. You have up to 1 year to get Apple Care.
All Macs have a standard one year warranty, purchasing Apple Care ensures another two years of coverage, making it three years of coverage against manufacturing defects.
And no, you can't purchase another Apple Care to get another two or three years after Apple Care ran out after the first tree years.

its just a matter of your financial situation ,
if you got enough cash to buy every year a new iMac then you certainly wont need apple care

Recently spent 3 hours with various telephone support from Apple. Took Imac(late 08) to Apple Reseller(no Apple store in our area). They spent a couple of days to determine that the hard drive was failing. Replaced drive and Imac working like brand new. Thank goodness for Applecare. Highly recommend. Only this one issue in over two years.
LOL. Mine wasn't even failing, it was making noise and in fact they couldn't even find a problem within the 5 minutes I was there. I went in, told them my problems, they took the computer in, and was out within 5 minutes.
I plan to get AppleCare for mine. Any all-in-one like the iMac isn't very user serviceable, so it's definitely worth it even if it's only something like a hard drive failure. iMac AppleCare is relatively cheap compared to the AppleCare on MacBook Pros and even Mac Pros.
I have one last question. It may have already been answered, but I'm too dumb to notice. The iMac comes with 1 year of warranty and if I buy the Apple Care will it combine to give me 4 years of warranty or does it cut off at 3?

It's just a little box with a serial number inside. It gives you directions on the website to go to, and you enter this little number in a box online and it registers you.
