iMac apps freezing - having to force quit constantly.

I've recently purchased a 21.5 iMac, and ever since last week, it has been immaculate. Lately, however, a lot of my downloaded apps (steam, google chrome) are beginning to lock-up when i go to quit them. Ive done all that verify disk/repair stuff, but still no luck. Anyone have any ideas on what to do?? thanks.
