imac as monitor does the speaker work to?

so there is my question. will the speakers work as you use the mac as a monitor?

the video cable carries no audio; you;ll need a separate connection for audio.

thats what i wanted to know. if the speakers can be used with a separate audio source. ie: will the audio in ports work with a dvd player. and could you control the volume.
