Ive been looking around the internet for this answer and I seem to be getting mixed answers. If I were to buy a 27inch iMac, can I use it as a Mac for personal use but also plug in my work pc laptop and use it as a secondary display for that laptop?

A 2014 or earlier iMac supports Target Mode. Google is your friend—lots of articles on how you might make it work and what a PIA it is from a PC. For starters, the PC must meet certain requirements.

It looks like you want Target Display Mode and according to Apple Support it is only designed to work with Macs and not a PC.
