I recently bought a MacBook and easily replaced the memory and hard drive myself...

I know you can replace the memory in an iMac, but what about the hard drive? Are there any other parts that can be user replaced without voiding the warranty?

The current iMac does not have a user-serviceable hard drive - RAM is the only user-serviceable part. It IS possible to change the HD yourself if you know what you're doing, but you need to buy the correct tools to remove the glass panel from the front - and you'll need to remove the LCD too. Not for the faint-hearted and it WILL void your warranty.

You'll find a take-apart guide at iFixit

thanks for the info! I'm not really in the 'market' right now, but i will be later this year. Maybe by then they'll be user-servicable hard drives. And if not then I'll just use an external drive!

My pleasure - the annoying thing is that the older white C2D iMacs DID have user-upgradeable HDs...

Still, firewire works perfectly well, and is the way I'd go too =]

Really? I knew the g5's were VERY easy to open (not to mention that was the only way to upgrade the RAM), But I thought Apple really made it hard to open the white intel's. So you can open a white intel iMac without voiding the warranty? Apple allows it? Apple doesn't allow it on the new Al ones? Isn't it easier to desemble an aluminum imac?

will the apple store replace a hard drive?

No, only if there is a problem, you can't put a bigger one in.

I think they pretty much covered everything. It's not as bad as it seems if you've taken computers and such apart before.
