Hi there,

I just recently tried to get a 20" iMac G5 (been sitting in a box for a long time) to work. It displayed erratic behaviour, sometimes starting up fine, but more often getting stuck on grey spinning wheel or even failing to find startup disk.

Symptoms led me to believe that the problem was with a faulty HDD. Hence, I bought a brand new WD 160GB HDD today, opened up the iMac, and swapped it out.

Booting off the original restore disk works fine until I get to the "select destination" part, where no drives show up to be selected.

What can I do to make the drive show up? Is the problem with the data connection to the disk or something physical? Any other wisdom?

Many thanks as always guys,

Just had to replace the hard drive on my Macbook. I am pretty sure I had to format the drive first before I could install the OS. I think I used disk utility on the install disk. This was Leopard.
