IMac can't read Burned DVD's

My IMac cannot read some burned DVD's. I purchased it a year ago. It runs on Mac OS X v 10.6.5. When I place the DVD's in my computer, they register as blank. I have seen similar problems on other forums, but no one has found a solution. People suggest using different DVD-R types or cleaning the disks, but this is not the problem...

The DVD's can be read just fine on my wife's MacBook. Why on earth can they not be recognized on my computer with better hardware?
